Honorable Judy Baar Topinka, (January 16, 1944 - December 10, 2014), Illinois State Comptroller and longtime PNA member and friend, suddenly passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the age of 70.
Judy Baar Topinka was born in Riverside, Illinois, to William and Lillian Baar, the children of Czech and Slovak immigrants. She graduated in 1962 from Ferry Hall School in Lake Forest and entered Northwestern University in Evanston. Judy received a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the university's Medill School. She was an alumna of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. After leaving Northwestern, Judy became a reporter for several suburban Chicago newspapers and rose through the ranks to become an editor. Judy established her own public relations business, through which she began a career in consulting for various political candidates, also served as Treasurer from 1995 to 2007, and former chairwoman of the Illinois Republican Party. She was the first woman to become state treasurer, first to be elected to three consecutive terms and the first Republican to hold the post in more than thirty-two years. During her last term as Treasurer, she was the only elected statewide official from the Republican Party, in Illinois. Judy served the people of Illinois faithfully and with integrity for 34 years!
Judy was a longtime proud member and dear friend of the Polish National Alliance, she was a great supporter and member of several of Polonia's organizations, and attended social events from the May 3rd the Polish Constitution Day Parade to the White and Red Ball, often escorted with her dear and longtime friend and former PNA National Vice President Stanley M. Jendzejec. An outstanding and compassionate and genuine human being. I will fondly remember some very funny and poignant times we spent together! You will be dearly missed but profoundly remembered! God Bless You! Love and respect to your immediate family (son Joseph and Christina Topinka, and grandchild). Fraternally, former longtime employee and friend Charles A. Komosa, PNA National Secretary.
