17 PARTICIPATES IN
23RD ANNUAL SENIOR OLYMPICS
Garfield Heights, Ohio - The 23rd Annual
Senior Olympics, sponsored by the Senior Citizen Resources,
Inc., in Cleveland Ohio, took place from April 30, 2008 thru May
9, 2008. The ages of the 295 participants varied from 60 year to
95 years.
There were nineteen sporting events,
including individual and teams. Several of the categories were
basketball, foul shot, table tennis, golf, bowling, billiards,
darts, volleyball, horseshoes, etc. Our own (Union of Poles
Division member) Cheri Dzuro, Athletic Director and Teacher at
James Rhodes High School recruited students to assist the
players. They retrieved ping pong balls, darts, basketballs, and
other items to make it easy on the "seniors".
Medals of gold, silver, and bronze were
awarded to the winners. Competition was kept in seperate age
groups between men and women in most events - 60-69, 70-79,
80-89, and over 90 year of age. It was gratifying seeing men and
women over 90 years, competing with vim and vigor.
The event concluded with a banquet and award
presentation. Cleveland Mayor Jackson and Regina Brett,
columnist for "The Plain Dealer" addressed the audience.
Joseph and Dorothy Zalewski, members of the
PNA/UOP have been faithful participants for the last twenty two
years, missing only the very first year. They encouraged my wife
Diana, and me to join in the fun. This year PNA Commissioner
Frances Lisowski, participated in with us. We all had a good
time and even won some medals. Next year I hope we can encourage
many of the PNA and Union of Poles members to be a part of this
rewarding experience. Remember, after all, you are only as old
as you feel - and competition brings out the "youth" in you.
